Springvale Road Streetlighting Trial

A trial of 250watt HPS lamps fitted with the Active Reactor was installed on a major arterial road in Melbourne in August 2004. Figure 1 shows the installation of the luminaires on the poles used in the trial.
Two groups of lamps were installed; the Active Reactor Group containing Active Reactor controllers & the Control Group fitted with standard reactor ballasts. The following are the installation details.
Active Reactor Group
Location of trial Springvale Road, Forest Hill Victoria 3131 Australia
Road type Dual carriageway, main arterial
Lighting scheme 10.5m poles at 44m spacing,
median mounted with twin 3m outreach arms
No. poles 7
No. luminaires  14
Luminaire type Sylvania “Roadstar”
Lamp 250W HPS
Figure 1.

Standard (Control) Group
As per the Active Reactor Group (comprising 14 luminaires) except that the controllers were standard 250W reactor ballasts.
Site Monitoring
Each group of lights is connected to a separate circuit. An electronic power analyser is used in each circuit to measure supply volts, amps, power, power factor, energy & THD.
Results
The trial has been in operation for over 30 months (10,000+ hours) and the following results have been obtained:
1 There has not been a single failure of the Active Reactor during this period. Summer temperatures have been as high as 40 deg Celsius and winter temperatures have been as low as 5 deg Celsius.
2 Figure 2 shows the energy savings over the period. A saving of 23% has been realised by the Active Reactor Group compared to the Control Group.
3 Figure 3 shows the lamp life extension based on lamp voltage measurements. It is anticipated that lamp life will be extended by 100% for the Active Reactor group compared to the Control Group based on the measurements taken.

Voltage Rise Graphs

Lamp Voltage Rise Graphs for 8,000 hours of operation
250 watt HPS Streetlights

From Graph

Active Reactor lamp has a voltage rise of 1.25V/1000 hours
Standard Ballast lamp has voltage rise of 2.50V/1000 hours

Based on above lamp voltage rises the lamp on the Active Reactor should last approx twice as long as the lamp on the Standard Ballast
